Monika Toporek
Board Member
I graduated from the University of Economics in Krakow and am currently studying Balkan Studies and Serbian Philology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań out of passion. I have several years of corporate and managerial experience, including five consecutive years as a board member of an NGO.
I have been involved with Salam Lab since 2021, initially supporting the Education Department and later the Help Department as a volunteer. I took this step out of disagreement with the stereotypical and unequal treatment of people from different cultural backgrounds, origins, and beliefs. At Salam Lab, I found a space to realize myself according to my values and views. I believe that education and providing accurate information about the world around us will enrich us as people and make life easier for everyone. In addition to managing the organization’s daily operations, I focus on marketing development support fundraising processes, and, as a former process engineer with a broader perspective, I constantly think about improving and developing the organization. In my free time, I volunteer to support our editorial team by writing articles and news for the Peaceful Newsletter
What does empathy mean to you?
Empathy is an ability without which I can’t imagine my life. The ability to empathize with
another person’s situation and consider their perspective helps me understand them. I think
we too rarely ask ourselves “Why?” before drawing any conclusions. Empathy facilitates
contact and makes the other person feel seen and treated with respect. If not for empathy, I
wouldn’t have met many wonderful people or formed friendships. It works like magic!
Note—you can learn this… and that’s also education.
Which element of Salam Lab’s mission is most important to you?
The most important element of our mission is amplifying the voices of those experiencing
exclusion—people who are part of society but, for some reason, are pushed to the margins,
stigmatized, and deprived of opportunities. Stereotypes that we unreflectively repeat and the
belief that some people are better or worse destroy human potential and lives or at least
make life extremely difficult. I would like all of us to get to know each other and never have to
fight for someone’s rights and life to be recognized.
