Kenyan refugee Rosemary Kariuki received the 2021 “Local Hero” award in Australia for her work to help displaced women overcome gender-based isolation and violence
Rosemary fled persecution in Kenya to Australia in 1999. On Christmas 2001, she wrote a short note with her details and an invitation to tea on Christmas cards and put them at the door of several apartments in her building.
This is how her work with support for women with experience of migration began.
